This is a call to Kenyan university students, unusual ideas and striking projects! If you need the spark that will ignite fire and boost you towards entrepreneurship, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
University students in Kenya can take part in a series of mentorship events to be held between 13th and 15th July 2011 at nine different universities. The Entrepreneurship and Leadership Foundation (E+L), a not for profit organization that seeks to empower youths has organized the youth entrepreneurship campaign themed ‘Do you have the entrepreneurship gene?’
Many of you will recognize the urge to turn an idea into a business, feel creative enough to start a project on your own yet, don’t know where to start and how to channel this creative energy. The E+ L will host two mentorship programmes dubbed, e-Tatu, and the Junior World Entrepreneurship Forum (JWEF) aimed at stirring the entrepreneurship gene among youths. This is the ideal platform to give soon-to-be entrepreneurs valuable keys and tools to go ahead with their ideas.
The events are expected to attract more than 5400 students, young and seasoned entrepreneurs, academia and policy makers. More than 1, 400 mentors will expose youth to entrepreneurship through mentoring with a record 72 viable commercial projects collated by students profiled.
The whole project will cover simultaneously nine universities namely, Strathmore, University of Nairobi (UoN) , the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) , Daystar , KCA , Egerton, Moi , Kabarak and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
This three day entrepreneurship campaign endeavors to get youth aged between 19 to 24 years old to shift their minds towards creating wealth and job opportunities by harnessing opportunities around their operating environment through interactions with entrepreneurs as role models in starting and managing businesses.
The forums cover different aspects of entrepreneurship, mainly Agri-business, Domestic Venture Capital, Energy and Information and Communication Technology. Obviously, this will be an extensive time for students to network, learn, share and go ahead with their project.
The good news is: the campaign is expected to create at least 10 direct sustainable formal businesses by the end of the year. In the next ten years the initiative is expected to result in 3, 000 businesses and cross border trade among youth in the East Africa Community states riding on exchange of ideas and joint commercial activities among youth in the region. This is quite an important forecast that will contribute to the dynamism of the different economies.
In the last two years, E+L has affected over 200 businesses entrepreneurs and has capacity strength of over 200 top captains of industry and entrepreneurs as mentors.
If you are one of the lucky students based in Kenya, then, make sure you don’t miss this opportunity. Be part of those entrepreneurs shaping Africa’s successful and exciting future.
